Community Update – 04/03/10
Congratulations to Crystal Mealer and James Leeman.
They commented on Leadership Freak (http://ow.ly/1uiGH) and received free, signed copies of Katy Tynan’s book, “Survive Your Promotion.”
Read a review of Katy’s book: http://ow.ly/1uiH0
Purchase “Survive you Promotion,” on Amazon.
Apology:
I should have posted the names of the recipients of Katy’s book sooner. I realize that some LF readers were waiting to purchase Katy’s book until the recipients were announced. I’ll act more quickly next time.
Request:
April 18 to 23 I’m flying to Oregon to speak at a private college. Among other things, I’m delivering a six hour seminar on Mission/Vision. Can you share articles, stories, or quotes that address this topic? I’d love to quote some Leadership Freaks. I’ll be using this blog as an illustration of vision.
Comments:
Thanks to everyone who adds comments. I enjoy them and I know LF readers do too.
Quotes:
“Criticism is something you can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing. – Arostotle.
“What people see is determined by where they sit.” – John Maxwell in, “Leadership Gold”
“The first step in figuring out what you’re looking for in a future mate is to look back at past relationships. – Shawn Graham in, “Courting Your Career”
“You do big things by doing a lot of small thing.” – Kouzes & Posner in, “The Leadership Challenge”
“Vision becomes a bold reason for living.” – Barna in, “The Power of Vision”
“Don’t narrow the dream, expand the team.” – LF

Leadership is not seeing which line is the longest and then running to the front. Sometimes, leadership means standing in line all by yourself.
Anthony,
Thank you for taking a moment to give back to the LF community! Great quote.
Regards,
Dan
Congratulations James and Crystal – I hope you find the book helpful and I would love to hear any feedback you have about it! Thank you Dan for hosting the contest and to everyone who participated and got the word out! I’m enjoying getting to know you all and look forward to continuing our conversations!
Katy
Katy,
I definitely let you know what I think of your writing. It is on the top of my stack to read.
Have a safe and relaxing weekend,
Jim
Drill Sergeant: Gump! What’s your sole purpose in this army?
Forrest Gump: To do whatever you tell me, drill sergeant!
Drill Sergeant: God damn it, Gump! You’re a god damn genius! This is the most outstanding answer I have ever heard. You must have a goddamn I.Q. of 160. You are goddamn gifted, Private Gump. Listen up, people…
Forrest Gump: [narrates] Now for some reason I fit in the army like one of them round pegs. It’s not really hard. You just make your bed real neat and remember to stand up straight and always answer every question with “Yes, drill sergeant.”
Drill Sergeant: …Is that clear?
Forrest Gump: Yes, drill sergeant!
It has to be a metaphor. Real leaders do know how to serve….
Hans,
Loved reading your comment…or Gumps comment!
I love the movie, who doesn’t?
Smiling!
Dan
Dan,
Send me your email address and I’ll send you some PDFs of Mission/Vision. BTW, note the two “n’s” in my name. It makes a difference in this internet world we live in.
Later,
Jim
Thanks Jim… email is on it’s way. DAn
Dan, I do a lot of work in this area. Specifically, I assist troubled churches or churches in transition in discovering an expansive mission statement and a compelling vision that goes with it. If you like, I’d be glad to send you some of my material. You can also find a few resources at our website (but it’s sparsely populated right now b/c I don’t have the bandwidth to get it finished!)
Bud,
Thanks for your first comment on LF. I’ve sent you a note via email. I appreciate your generosity.

Dan: When speaking on the importance of vision I often point out this simple truth:
“You can’t be a leader if you don’t know where you are going.”
Mike,
Short and sweet! Thanks for leaving your first comment on LF. Hope you keep coming back.
Best to you,
Dan
Mission is the immediate, now………..Vision is the future…………We used to have a residential school in northern Saskatchewan and we called it the MISSION….their goal, salvation, education for our people…what they lacked was a long term vision that we as First Nations people were involved in, participated in, and accepted….as a result…..hundreds if not thousands went through the MISSION…. few went after their own vision……………
Marcia,
Thank you for your leaving your first comment on Leadership Freak. It’s a powerful reminder that vision can drive life and without vision our mission eventually flounders.
Best to you,
Dan
