How to Overcome the Fear of Losing
Fear of losing keeps you from winning; holding on holds you back. The more you have to lose the more you have to protect. Protecting is backward facing.
Protect family and reputation but let go of past success.
Clinging to success makes you fail.
Things to hold to:
- Cling to dreams – let go of successes. Past success is a great platform but a horrible resort.
- Cling to serving people let go of things. Dreams about cars, homes, vacations, and wealth won’t satisfy if you aren’t already satisfied; they only make you more of who you currently are.
Great dreams have little to do with buildings, accomplishment, or reputation. Those things are, at best, tools on the path to serving others.
Great dreamers dream of how to improve the world more than acquiring new things.
When Martin Luther King said, “I have a dream,” it was about others.
Dreams centered on things foster fear of losing things, but dreams focused on serving people set us free.
Creating obligations:
Serving people, while expecting them to serve you in return, creates bondage. Serve freely. This point has nothing to do with compensation. You deserve what you earn. Give more than what you earn.
Reciprocity is normal and desirable, but demanding it is manipulation.
One more thing:
Serving others begins when you serve your gift. Honor your best self by giving it to others. Express who you. Don’t squander it.
Final word:
Don’t wait till you have everything you want before serving others.
What attitudes or behaviors address the fear of losing?
You must be reading my mind and heart this morning, Dan. “Serving others begins by serving your gift. Honor your best self by giving it to others. Express who you are don’t squander it.”
Thanks. Now I can get back to work and service.
Have a great day.
what a beautiful post. I’ve done the ambitious dreaming of building my empire….and it left me empty and broken. Serving others is rebellious to today’s culture-message.
Love it Dan, keep em coming!
Hi Dan, very nice post. My personal dream has always been to make it “our” dream. Not only will we reach higher, and better, but we will do it together and learn about each other along the journey. Do we not rejoice when our loved ones share their dreams and we engage in helping them reach it? The best way I know to help you find your dream is to merge and forge an alliance that is self-renewing every time I can elicit your smile, your caring and your love. The greatest gift that can be given and received simultaneously is friendship. “True friends are the family we get to choose” and the reveries that circle can generate is boundless. So yes Dan by all means lets cling to our dreams ; just let us do it together and if anyone slips the many hands will reach out and grab us safely back so we all can continue dreaming. 🙂 Cheers and may everyone have a great weekend.
Yes, very nice. When we serve others from the heart, it promotes empathy, compassion, and creativity. Anything else is competiton, and that gets into ‘what’s yours today is someone else’s tomorrow’, and people feel that. Generally, it breaks things down because they don’t feel respected.
Very nice article, and timely for me today (you really have no idea).
Just a note about connecting your dreams to the service of others. This can become a slippery slope for people pleasers. As a good friend of mine once said “It’s important to care what people think of you. But more important is to decide who’s thoughts matter” Serving others at the expense of your own self-care. Your dreams are your own and should guide your own authentic journey.
the article is a nice piece…matter of fact one of the best post I needed at this point if my being.
I’ve got a question though- i agree to the fact that it is a good thing to serve others and attentive listening is one of the best gift- but what happens when you prioritise others before you, it should be the other way round I suppose? I am a firm beleiver of the fact that to really love others, first you’ve got to love yourself!
what would your take be on this?
