The Reason I Haven’t Posted in a Week
One week ago today, I was lying flat on my back looking at the low-hanging ceiling of a life-flight helicopter. My right leg was cocked at an unusual and uncomfortable angle, painfully yelling for attention. At the same time, a highly trained medical professional relieved the deadly pressure around my collapsed lung. His skill is the reason I’m alive today and writing this post.
When my wife arrived at the scene of the accident, she was informed by the police that I had been involved in a serious car accident resulting in numerous head injuries, several broken bones and a right hip that was severely broken. She was told I had been life- flighted to Geisinger Medical Center.
She called our three children – one who lives here in Williamsport PA, one who lives in Fort Collins CO, and one who is married to a pastor and lives in Lancaster PA. They all immediately stopped what they were doing. Even the pastor stopped his sermon. They all rushed to be with their mom and to stand at my side.
A Leadership application: performance requires preparation.
You cannot know the exact situation that will emerge in your context – but you can put policies and procedures in place that enable people to make decisions. Don’t solve every contingency.
A framework:
- Create a framework rich in values and loaded with mission.
- Crisis provides new opportunities for existing and emerging leaders to perform.
- A framework provides an opportunity for organizational and leadership development.
If you can be tough on values and vision – crystal clear – you enable and enhance performance during times of crisis.

Hope you are progressing well. I used to do life flight in California. I can tell you the best thing you can do to support the flight crew who took care of you is request a reunion when you are feeling better. In that job everything happens so quick and we often don’t get to talk to those that we helped. They will value a follow up reunion. When we did our reunion we had the press there to record it as saving a life is a pretty incredible event and story worth capturing and sharing with others (http://www.myvalleynews.com/story/47590/).
If there is anywhere you have to be a leader it is as a flight crew member on a medical helicopter. As you posted Leadership performance required preparation. When you land on scene as a flight crew everyone turns to you to solve some of the most serious, chaotic, emergent, and often scary problems. If you are not prepared to lead the event, the scene, the situation and the other providers at the scene, it could be the difference between life and death. When we land on scene often we have no idea what will present to us. We often have minimal to no information about the event. Typically we get 30 seconds of information and then we have to make quick decisions, provide treatment and try to spend no longer than 9 minutes on the ground. That means we have to get report, do an assessment, implement interventions, prepare patient for transport, load into helicopter and depart in that short period.
This could not be done without a framework. We use a framework to ensure that no matter what chaos presents we follow a systematic approach to solve the problem, lead the scene and ensure successful care of our patients. Frameworks help ensure that we have the structure to deal with the unexpected effectively. Frameworks ensure we are not distracted. Frameworks help us lead. Frameworks equal success!

I guess it would be lazy to cut and paste what Julia said but that’s how I feel too. This is a time to focus on you and your recovery. You’ve got supporters from all over pulling for you. We’ll just go around creating leadership quagmires for ourselves and when you emerge, you can lend your great insight to the issues we’ve gotten ourselves into and we can all set about making the world right again!
I keep thinking of “The Checklist Manifesto” in your situation – a great management/leadership book about applying the most simple of strategies to making sure medical outcomes are optimal.
But back to you – sending my heartfelt wishes and most fervent prayers for a thorough recovery.

I have been a recent reader – less than two months – and have enjoyed your insights and the occasional exhortation. I am grateful for your having survived the accident and taking the time to share with us both the news and insight. Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery. My dad died earlier this year in May, when I was away 10,000 miles away – luckily I made it back in 36 hours, so I know how precious every moment can be and the lesson of having to be prepared hits close to home. “Enable people to make decisions” – Truly a lesson for all of us. My wife is a probate paralegal and I cannot tell you how many stories she has shared with me regarding clients who have not executed or updated their wills and living wills. Dan, your accident and lesson emphasize the need for all of us to be sure these critical documents are current and those you have entrusted with decisions regarding your health know what you expect.
Word to the wise Dan, I spent almost a year learning how to walk again post-cancer surgery, learn to love your physical therapist.

Circumstances do not set time. They can stand anytime. As you mentioned, to face those circumstances, we need preparation. I absolutely agree with you. Speedy recovery!
First and foremost I pray you have a speedy recovery. Secondly I want to thank you for the information you gave about preparation. Its something how often times we can prepare professionally but don’t prepare our families for certain unexpected situations similiar to what you’ve experienced. I myslef have been experiencing some health issues. I’ve put it off for sometime and recently found out that its very serious. Although I’m not concerned and I place my trust in the Lord. I still need to prepare myself and my family on how to handle the issue. I’ve made it my priority to prepare my family for such issues and how we are to operate in them. It only helps make things run more smoother. Again thanks for this message because it was truely blessed me. Get better SOON!!!!!!

The best advice I ever got when I was healing after an injury was this: Sleep all day, every day, unless you’re talking to your doctor or your loved ones or eating a nutritious meal. Sleep, eat nutritious foods, and sleep some more. That’s all you should do for at least a few weeks.

How shocking – glad you are through the worst. I end up injured in hospital a few years back, i was much better in 3 months and a pretty much a full recovery in 12. It is quite amazing how the body repairs itself.

Hi Dan, I was flattened by a vehicle in January this year, went through hell, but have now come out the other end, so to speak.
I wish you well in your recovery and hope to reassure you that you will gain more inner strength from this experience than you may even imagine at this moment. The best way I can try to explain this is that you will suddenly realise that you have a new frame of mind and I know you will use it well.
