7 Powerful Ways to Reignite Your Energy
The less energy you have the more negative you become.
Energized leaders are better.
Low energy leaders:
- Feel unappreciated.
- Want to quit.
- Blow up.
- Can’t create or try new things.
- Believe the world is out to get them.
3 energy principles:
- Long-term success requires energy management.
- Prioritize energy by paying attention to things that fill or empty your tank.
- Law of energy: You can’t take out more than you put in and achieve richness of life.
The secret to managing energy is doing things that give energy.
7 ways to reignite your energy:
- Take a gratitude walk. “Almost everyday I take a walk of gratitude.”
- Create small wins. Progress energizes.
- Get up and walk for two or three minutes. Go back to work.
- Drink more water. “We’re 70% water not 70% diet coke.”
- Take a 20 minute power nap.”Tell the boss you’re meditating on the mission statement.”
- Monitor and mitigate negative thoughts. “You can’t be stressed and thankful at the same time.”
- Write thank you notes.
“To Thrive, our heart needs to be in gratitude mode.” Jon Gordon, author of, “The Energy Bus.”
Energy and interactions:
- Pay attention to small positives. Negatives have deeper impact than positives.
- Create positive interactions, even while working on problems.
- Touch. Human touch energizes. A pat on the back makes a difference.
- Eliminate technological interruptions.
- Beware energy vampires. “People who are serving out of obligation lose energy.”
“When we energize others we energize ourselves.”
Meaning, purpose, and energy:
- Pursue the happiness of others, if you want to find your own.
- Meaning precedes happiness. How does your work make the lives of others better?
- Faith answers fear. “Fear is surviving not thriving.”
- Forgive. Everyone who can’t forgive is drained by bitterness..
- Pray and meditate. “Just close your eyes and say, ‘Thank you God.’”
What drains your energy?
What energy tips help you?
All sentences with quotes in this post are from my conversation with Jon Gordon, author of, “The Energy Bus.” I called Jon last Tuesday to talk about energy. This post is inspired by that conversation.
“Pray and meditate. “Just close your eyes and say, ‘Thank you God.’” This is the best!
thanks, Joyce
Thanks Joyce!
I have an energy tip taught to me by a therapist. When you need a break, are feeling drained and need an energy boost or are having trouble focusing, simply go outside and look up at the sky for a moment. Really notice the sky and the colors visible while taking in deep breaths. Her recommendation was a daytime solution but I’ve tried this at night noticing the stars and colors of the night sky and it works equally as well. I haven’t tried hanging my head out an open window but it seems reasonable to think that would work. 🙂
Water was mentioned. Water is huge. We are often more dehydrated than we realize. Coffee and soda add to dehydration. I try to drink one glass of water in-between all caffeinated drinks.
Thanks Lucille. Great practical suggestions. You remind me of the importance of lifting our head and breathing deeply.
Actually looking at the ceiling works just as well. It is very hard do be depressed or think of downer thoughts looking at the ceiling, Give it a shot. It is so easy. You can do it wherever you are.
Thanks Purposely. I’m going to give it a try!
Good morning Dan;
I like how you explain a Leaders role in addressing the daily issues we face both positive, & negative in nature. Negative issues will drain the energy of you, your teams, and your iorganization if you allow. I choose to focus more on the positive results and behavior’s.
The following is my advice to the newly appointed & promoted.
Leade4rs BE YOURSELF. Don’t be what others want you to be. Follow your heart, give with your soul, and lead with your wisdom, passion, and experience. “Beside’s, it’s what got you to where you are in the 1st place.” Be open to others and accept them for who they are whether you both see and agree to the same views or not. Listen to others, ‘TO UNDERSTAND THEM’,, offer guidance ‘IF’ others seek it, share your knowledge if you can help, but be careful not to become ‘ruling’ of your followers. Be more of a mentor or coach to your people. Besides others helped you get to where you are todaythrough thier guidance whetherit be our parents, teachers, coaches, Philosophers, or simply everydaypeople, it’s called; “Paying it Forward.”
Got to go to a meeting my friend.
“KEEP ON KEEP’N ON MY FRIEND!”
Cheers Dan
SGT Steve
Thanks SGT. Wonderful suggestions! Thanks for sharing your insights.
Definitely have to try some of these out. Not having an actual job at the moment I have been feeling more drained than usual. I think it’s the lack of motion but I’m trying to remember to get up and out early and it helps to keep the momentum up. Thanks, your post are always so helpful.
Thanks lexc. You have my best wishes for your search and for your energy. I’ve heard it said that sitting (lack of motion) is the new smoking. That’s how bad it is for us. We better get moving.
Water!!! Number 1 for me!! 🙂
Thanks Julie.
And….energy drinks are no help!!
I brought an extra yoga mat to my office. When I am feeling overworked, overtired, overstressed I just get on my mat and do a few asanas – it helps me to refocus and reenergize. Thanks for the post – very helpful and timely as usual.
Thanks Julie. Thanks for sharing your story. You better close the door when you get on your mat. 🙂
I do a few squats while my computer starts or comes out of sleep mode. I also have a couple dumbbells by my desk.
I try to remember to lock my door ever since my boss came in while I was doing a backbend over my exercise ball to stretch out my back – he startled me and I fell off! He was highly entertained by the entire scenario! LOL
Good call.
Running in place works for resetting my energy level. When I feel drain, frustrated, and the words on the screen or what every I am reading start to blur. I just shut my door, run in place as fast as I can for 10 to 15 seconds. Then back to it with a clear mind.
Love the gratitude walk advice. I take one daily and found it not only energizing, but also helpful meditation and mind clearing.
Thanks Greg. One of my favorites, too.
Dear Dan,
A real good inspiring post!
Good tips to get energized. More than anything, it’s positive thoughts and faith in self & others. Celebrating small wins with listening to success stories can boost the morale and energy levels of teammates to the higher level.
Working on a day’s priority tasks with humility is a sure way to remain energetic throughout. The job satisfaction can also energize a lot. Undoubtedly, the God will always be a source of good energy anytime.
Dan, this post says so much and focuses on wellness as peak performance. The idea of energy is not always about motion per se, it can be the many qualities you speak to here: Positivity, appreciation, creating, peace, faith, happiness, trust, eustress, gratitude, and yes, how energy breeds energy.
Your readers are gravitating to wellness, and how they find ways to “feel felt” and feel best in order to contribute most—while ameliorating stress, anxiety and angst.
We all want meaning, purpose and energy.
We all want and need to befriend silence…like when we drop by a church during the day when it is empty and take-in the presence and nature of quiet and peace—and energy and confidence we have after leaving there. Stephen King—who was a teacher before he became a best-selling author of 350 million books—said he often feels like he has JUMPER CABLES attached to his brain after a long night or a tough week.
That’s basically what we’re doing to ourselves when we constantly have the TV on at home (in every room). The radio on in the car. The iPod cranking during every workout. Or daily interaction with friends or coworkers who need our ear or our inspiring and encouraging hours. Our brains are always blown up with stimulation. We need to turn the noise off. We need to remove the jumper cables from our brain.
To find silence, we need a time and perhaps a place where we can simply experience and bring forth all we are and all we are capable of in the creative incubation of our subconscious. Silence is the sleep that nourishes wisdom of our life, living, being, and doing.
Love the “power nap / meditating on the mission statement” idea! Also – my employees and I will get up and take walks outside, especially when the weather is nice. Those breaks help keep the creative juices flowing and keep our energy up as well.
This is great. As a sales trainer, I’m sure I’ll be teaching my guys this very soon. Thanks for the post!
Awesome suggestions! Managing your metabolism is something I practice every day, and I always encourage others to do the same. These practical tips will definitely help. Thanks. I think I’ll try “meditating on our mission statement” this afternoon 🙂
