Only fools intentionally destroy their lives. Bad habits are never intentional.
No one gets up saying:
- “Starting today, I’ll ignore people.”
- “Today feels perfect for defensiveness.”
- “I think I’ll go home defeated.”
Bad habits sneak in wearing work boots.
Hurry becomes self-sabotage. Pressure is permission to make excuses.
Destructive behaviors take root before they’re recognized.
3 Reasons Destructive Habits Take Root
- Time pressure excuses neglect. Listening shrinks. Empathy dies. Self-reflection feels like a waste.
- Constant crisis normalizes dysfunction. Reaction replaces intention. Confusion crushes clarity. Leadership turns to firefighting.
- Problems create false purpose. You only feel valuable when fixing something. Darkness prevails when problems receive more attention than progress.
Break the Habit of Bad Habits
Interrupt automatic behaviors; crush destructive habits.
Personal Interruptions
- Take a breath before responding.
- Choose how to show up before you show up at work.
- Record your intentions each morning.
Team Interruptions
- Reward progress, don’t honor panic.
- Finish one thing before starting another thing.
- Schedule people-time. Crisis finds you. You need to find people.
- Find a habit-breaking partner. Notice each other’s progress. Call out lapses.
Bad habits grip leaders while they’re working to do good.
