  • Give control with accountability.
  • Build redundant talent. Crosstrain and rotate jobs.

#2. How are you making it safe to speak truth to power?

  • Listen calmly. Ban interruptions.
  • Honor constructive dissent.
  • Lower the volume of your voice.
  • Say, “I’m not sure.”
  • Sit with, not over.

#3. How are you expanding capacity?

Leaders don’t simply get things done. They build capacity to deliver results.

  • What have you recently delegated?
  • Who are you mentoring?

#4. How are you learning?

Leaders who aren’t learning live in a world that no longer exists.

  • What are teammates teaching you?
  • What are you reading?
  • How are you connecting with people who are better than you?

#5. How are you making yourself accountable?

  • Complete this sentence. “My team members know I’m accountable to them because I _______.”
  • What character quality are you developing? Who’s asking you about it?
