The Reason I Haven’t Posted in a Week
One week ago today, I was lying flat on my back looking at the low-hanging ceiling of a life-flight helicopter. My right leg was cocked at an unusual and uncomfortable angle, painfully yelling for attention. At the same time, a highly trained medical professional relieved the deadly pressure around my collapsed lung. His skill is the reason I’m alive today and writing this post.
When my wife arrived at the scene of the accident, she was informed by the police that I had been involved in a serious car accident resulting in numerous head injuries, several broken bones and a right hip that was severely broken. She was told I had been life- flighted to Geisinger Medical Center.
She called our three children – one who lives here in Williamsport PA, one who lives in Fort Collins CO, and one who is married to a pastor and lives in Lancaster PA. They all immediately stopped what they were doing. Even the pastor stopped his sermon. They all rushed to be with their mom and to stand at my side.
A Leadership application: performance requires preparation.
You cannot know the exact situation that will emerge in your context – but you can put policies and procedures in place that enable people to make decisions. Don’t solve every contingency.
A framework:
- Create a framework rich in values and loaded with mission.
- Crisis provides new opportunities for existing and emerging leaders to perform.
- A framework provides an opportunity for organizational and leadership development.
If you can be tough on values and vision – crystal clear – you enable and enhance performance during times of crisis.
Thank you for your concern. I won’t be online much. I’m hopeful for a full recovery in six months.
So happy to see you online again, Dan. Blessings to you, and prayers for a complete and rapid recovery.
To have ‘liked’ with post says it all.
Says it all. God speed the recovery phase.
wishing you a speedy recovery Dan
Wow, sorry to hear about your accident. You’re lucky. Speedy recovery to you and strength for your family.
Dan, I am absolutely amazed that you took time to not only write today, but to turn it into a lesson that everyone can learn from as well. I cannot imagine the pain you must be in, and yet, your writing does not suffer for it. You are amazing! You have been an inspiration and example to many, including people you’ve never met face-to-face. I love you. My prayers are with you and your family. I have faith in your recovery.
Blessings,
Julia
best wishes is smooth and continous healing of all your injuries.

Dearest Dan,
This year was truly a time for “thanksgiving” Thanksgiving that you are here and well.
You have been in our thoughts and in our prayers.
We wish you a speedy recovery. So great to see you writing again.
You have been greatly missed.
Love
Lolly
Our thoughts and prayers are for you to the God of glory. We are asking for encouragement, healing, and joy during your recuperation.
To have ‘liked’ this post says it all.
God speed the recovery phase.
This was a welcome post Dan, and I am amongst many wishing you a speedy recovery. While we have been kept in the loop about your progress, it always makes one feel that much more confident when you get it from source. Good seeing you and rest easy!
Wishing you a full recovery. Best to your family as well.
Dan,
Hope you are progressing well. I used to do life flight in California. I can tell you the best thing you can do to support the flight crew who took care of you is request a reunion when you are feeling better. In that job everything happens so quick and we often don’t get to talk to those that we helped. They will value a follow up reunion. When we did our reunion we had the press there to record it as saving a life is a pretty incredible event and story worth capturing and sharing with others (http://www.myvalleynews.com/story/47590/).
If there is anywhere you have to be a leader it is as a flight crew member on a medical helicopter. As you posted Leadership performance required preparation. When you land on scene as a flight crew everyone turns to you to solve some of the most serious, chaotic, emergent, and often scary problems. If you are not prepared to lead the event, the scene, the situation and the other providers at the scene, it could be the difference between life and death. When we land on scene often we have no idea what will present to us. We often have minimal to no information about the event. Typically we get 30 seconds of information and then we have to make quick decisions, provide treatment and try to spend no longer than 9 minutes on the ground. That means we have to get report, do an assessment, implement interventions, prepare patient for transport, load into helicopter and depart in that short period.
This could not be done without a framework. We use a framework to ensure that no matter what chaos presents we follow a systematic approach to solve the problem, lead the scene and ensure successful care of our patients. Frameworks help ensure that we have the structure to deal with the unexpected effectively. Frameworks ensure we are not distracted. Frameworks help us lead. Frameworks equal success!
Feel Better!
I was wondering what had happened to you ….. God bless and take it easy ……..
I guess it would be lazy to cut and paste what Julia said but that’s how I feel too. This is a time to focus on you and your recovery. You’ve got supporters from all over pulling for you. We’ll just go around creating leadership quagmires for ourselves and when you emerge, you can lend your great insight to the issues we’ve gotten ourselves into and we can all set about making the world right again!
I keep thinking of “The Checklist Manifesto” in your situation – a great management/leadership book about applying the most simple of strategies to making sure medical outcomes are optimal.
But back to you – sending my heartfelt wishes and most fervent prayers for a thorough recovery.
I was reading your post ready to find out that this was not real but only an allegory. I hope your recovery is speedy. God bless.
Glad to see you are OK Dan. Take care of yourself.
Jacques
You’re one tough cookie to endure, find the lesson, and share your insights so that we continue to benefit from your presence in our lives. It’s time to heal now, so please give that your full attention. We’ll all be here when you’re back on your feet. ~Dawn
So sorry to hear about your accident. Praying for your recovery and the strength and perseverance to see you through it.
I am so sorry for your accident. Hope everything goes well with you. Glad that you have such a loving family – that makes everything better. And loved you post. I find that to be true – instill principles that you can live by. Principles guide and direct your life.
Thanks again.
You are a lucky man. Hope you will be up and running soon.
As you can see, life can be over before you know it.
I guess you’ll live life more and intense than before.
Nothing wrong with that. But people around you didn’t encounter a near death experience. Your behavior will change. Keep that in mind.
Hope to read from you soon.
– Jos de Jong
Sorry to hear of you accident, happy to hear that you’re coming out of it. Best of health to you during your recovery.
Dan,
Thank you for finding a lesson in this personal tragedy. Many are blessed through your life and example. May God be with you and keep you.

Dan, I’m so glad you are going to be ok. God knows we need you here! Through our church here in Michigan, we have an online prayer ministry that sends requests out to about 2,000 people. I sent a prayer request for a quick recovery for you, and a special prayer for your wife and children. God bless and may you have a speedy recovery.
Sincerely,
Sherrie

Within every propblem there resides an opportunity. You’ve masterfully crafted a lesson out of your adversity Dan. Thank you for taking the time out of your pain to share it with us.
It certainly appears you and your family have much to give thanks for over this Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Wishing only the very best of everything – Always – for you and your family.
Very sorry to hear about your accident, Dan, but very happy to hear that you are alive and well enough to write this post! I wish you a speedy recovery. You’ve provided a great deal of value to many people. Sounds like it’s time to focus on getting yourself better. All the best in the recovery process, Paul
Dan, it seems almost automatic that you’d find life and leadership lessons in this accident, and that you’d want to share them with others. But, it’s still (and always) a _choice_ we make — how will we respond? Bless you for making such a positive choice. We’ll be thinking of you and your family as you recover. cvh
Dan,
It’s so great to see your post today. You’ve been in my thoughts and prayers this past week.
It was really helpful that your family provided info and updates in the comments section of your last post and on your Facebook page. I think that’s an example of the kind of framework you’re talking about where people can leadership during times of crisis.
Sending prayers for a full, smooth and speedy recovery.
Jesse
Best wishes for a full and complete recovery. Be sure and take the time to complete all of the physical therapy. It will make coming back easier in the long run.
You have just brought a sigh of relief (and joy) to your many, many fans and friends such as I who have been worrying about you and praying for you and your Family. While it had been communicated that you were out of danger, there’s something about actually reading your post (and, as mentioned above, somehow including a valuable lesson – totally you! :-)) that makes your physical improvement seem a lot more concrete. I first learned what happened from Lolly Daskal (she is truly a loyal fan and friend of yours, Pastor Dan). From all the tweets since then that have been posted, the love for you that all who know you have for you is quite awesome. It’s truly a reflection of who you are and what you do. Continued prayers and best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery!
What a shocking experience you and your family have endured. Wishing you speedy recovery and looking forward to your return when you are ready to share your wonderful wisdom and insights again.
Dan – I’m very sorry to read of your accident. Please take the time you need, as I believe that will keep your overall recovery time as short as possible. We’ll be here when you’re ready!
Best wishes
Jeremy
So sorry to hear about your accident! Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery. Focus on yourself and your therapy. Your loyal fans will still be here when you’re ready 🙂
Liza, well said.
Dan focus on your recovery. You have given us much wisdom to work with pending your return.
You will be missed in the interim, but certainly not forgotten.
Dear Dan, I echo what everyone has said and am glad you found the strength to write this post. Resilience, courage, love and inspiration has returned to the LF community for which we are all grateful. Holler if we can help in any way. God bless you and your wonderful family. Cheers! and Ka-Ching! Music to my ears 🙂
Dan,
Great to see that you are getting well! Please know you are in my prayers
Dear Dan.,
I have been a recent reader – less than two months – and have enjoyed your insights and the occasional exhortation. I am grateful for your having survived the accident and taking the time to share with us both the news and insight. Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery. My dad died earlier this year in May, when I was away 10,000 miles away – luckily I made it back in 36 hours, so I know how precious every moment can be and the lesson of having to be prepared hits close to home. Godspeed and get well soon.
Very sorry about the accident and very glad you are in recovery mode.
Being a bit of a black humor fan I couldn’t help but thinking this is really a heck of a way to generate some new blog material.
Hi Dan, I’m really sorry to hear about your accident – and am thankful that you had such capable medical professionals there to help. The way that you have build both the content and readership of Leadership Freak is little short of miraculous, and I hope and pray that your recovery will be the same.
Dan
Hope you get back soon! We have all enjoyed reading your posts everyday. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and helping us become better leaders.
Wish you a speedy recovery!
Best

Scary… you’re job here is clearly not done. A full recovery in six months sounds promising given the horrific events you described. I expect you’ll turn a bad situation into one of great learning and value for everyone in you’re life – but, first a focus on your well being. I wish you a speedy and complete recovery.
Dan, thanks for sharing the practical and actionable meaning from your personal tradgedy, and for reinforcing the value of a strong family!
Prayers and Best Wishes for a speedy recovery.

My brother, it’s good to see your words “in print” so soon after your accident & surgery! You’re so right – values & mission drive the right behaviors in the moment. Every time.
Follow doctor’s orders, give your wife a squeeze for us, and know you’re surrounded by healing vibes & prayer.
Cheers!

Dan – Here’s to a speedy and full recovery! Thank you for thinking of us, your readers, at a time when many would just be thinking about themselves (and rightfully so) – this is the sign of a truly great leader!

Dan,
Thanks for the post. Your situation is all too familiar to me as my husband suffered such a car crash last year. Very tense time. The journey of recovery is a magnificent one full of challenge, love and wonder. I wish you all the best.

Dan,
I’m sorry to hear about your accident. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Wow, Dan. I’m so glad you are recovering! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you keep your message out there. My prayers are with you!
Dan I lost an inspirational friend recently who touched many peoples lives, as you do. I’m shocked to hear of your accident but thrilled you will in your own way be able to continue your work in the future.
I have a concept called ‘Hippo Time is OK’ – sometimes we need to wallow and to perhaps feel either mad,bad or sad. You might need some Hippo time at some stage..that’s ok as it’s also temporary. I wish you well.

Hi Dan,
Rest softly, as you deserve it in this trying time.
Our prayers & thoughts are with you, your family & friends.
Your kindness in posting & sharing your thoughts with us has reached across the seas (I’m in New Zealand), inspiring us here too. For that we are enormously grateful, there’s plenty of material already supplied to keep us busy, so take all the time you need to recover. We’ll still be here when you get back 🙂
Stay safe & thank you for the gifts of deeper knowledge you pass out so freely.

To Dan and his Family,
I send you my sincere wishes for a return to full health with peace and tranquility.
Your example of putting your words into action, and the example, of support, your family has been is inspiring.
Dan! I am so sorry to hear you have been through such a horrendous accident – and so glad you are on the healing road.
Sending virtual hugs and warmest wishes for a speedy recovery.
I figured you took a few days off to be with family and friends. So glad you’re alive and well. Thanks for letting us know. Please keep us updated with your progress.
Dan, sorry to hear about your accident and certainly wish you a strong recovery.
“Enable people to make decisions” – Truly a lesson for all of us. My wife is a probate paralegal and I cannot tell you how many stories she has shared with me regarding clients who have not executed or updated their wills and living wills. Dan, your accident and lesson emphasize the need for all of us to be sure these critical documents are current and those you have entrusted with decisions regarding your health know what you expect.
Word to the wise Dan, I spent almost a year learning how to walk again post-cancer surgery, learn to love your physical therapist.
Finally Dan, sorry but you are going to have to scratch off your bucket list Mechanical Bull Riding. I was so looking forward to hearing about your experience.
My thoughts and prayers are with you my friend, Godspeed.
Now that pulls me out of my blog-less stupor. Dan that is just so wrenching. what a great family friends and community you have around you though. You were made to prevail, some time out to reflect (even more) and rest in considerably comfort of all the prayers and well wishes out there for you. 7 years back I was in alive-flight myself and I can tell you now (and almost ever-since) life has never been better.
Go well – and i can only echo Julia AC’s comments, you’re amazing!
Richard
Best wishes, Dan.
Prayers for a speedy recovery and grateful appreciation for all that you do and are. Peace be with you.
Thank God you are alive wish you a speedy recovery.
Get well soon. We’ll miss you.

Peace to your heart, and those of your loved ones.
Deelight
Dan,

Dan
I hope you are doing better. Rest an take care of yourself.
No way. What an experience. And you are still drawing and outlining learning experiences from even this .. :}
I had noticed your posts weren’t coming in. They aren’t just another of a plethora of emails I get each morning. My time is so limited online so I have three favorites and yours is one. And I missed you.
Confession time though; in me, you aren’t just mentoring your average workplace leader … or even your great corporate CEO … but a mum of ten future influencers; heads and not tails. Principals you share are glued all through my journal.
So now I take the time to give back and say thank you. Maybe while your energy now is focused on healing, this is a great opportunity for people to sow into you. So soak up my ‘high five’, breath in a list ful of virtual standing ovations and marinade in His pleasure of the amazing influencer and leader He has created in you.
I have been praying for you nonstop dear friend! Rest well now, and know you are cared about worldwide.
Dan, this is the first time you’ll be hearing from me, but I’ve been following your blog for quite some time. Just before you posted did I was really beginning to wonder why I haven’t heard from your blog.
I’m glad to hear from you and that you are on your way to recovery.
Will offer a prayer for your speedy and complete recovery.
Take care!

God bless you Dan and speed your recovery .. you and your family as well as those who treat you are in our prayers.
Dan,
My hands shook as I read your post and it took me a moment to become fully present to why…
I realized how much you and your work have come to mean to me in my life. That may seem strange since we’ve never met, but you have made such a difference for me in the time that I’ve been one of your readers that today’s post showed me that.
My guess is there are many that I speak for who are of the same sentiment. You have touched our hearts with the generosity of your work and how much of yourself to put into it.
Be well. We are out here supporting you all the way!
Dan,
M praying 4 a miraculous recovery. I have learned so much from your posts-you are an outstanding person and liked by many.

Dan,
You are a tribute to all you have written. Take the time you need to recover and rest. We are all pulling for you.
Dear Dan,
I pray to God for your speedy recovery. I convey my best wishes for you and your family.
Circumstances do not set time. They can stand anytime. As you mentioned, to face those circumstances, we need preparation. I absolutely agree with you. We need preparation based on true values, beliefs and caring. It was preparation based on values that helped you out whether it was skilled doctor or your family. I always believe that when you practice value, it will reflect sooner or later in many forms.
I believe that life has its own destiny. Also, destiny is decided. We cannot control our destiny. Given the facts, what we can do is to make our best effort with good intention so that we can enjoy our life. Life is not about possession but about intention and belief towards people and the world around.
I sincerely empathize with you and wish that you should heal soon.
Loyal reader, wishing you a speedy and healthy recovery! Be well, and don’t stress too much, everything in life happens for a reason.
Be safe, Leadership Freak

Praying for your full recovery, Dan. Not just saying that because it’s the right thing to say. I will be praying.

Dear Dan,
Sorry to learn your tragic, unfortunate accident and the injuries you had. It’s this time the family matters and the ready support that you got is admirable.
We appreciate your concern about your post and the readers even while lying on the bed and feeling apologetic for the probable miss till the time your complete healing takes place. That’s the spirit and self-commitment to your own blog. More interestingly, even in such a bed-ridden condition you have found an opportunity to draw a meaningful leadership lesson of going preparedness to meet the unforeseen crisis. Hats off to your creativity and the concern for your on-line readers.
My sincere prayers for you to have a speedy recovery and come back to normalcy to continue with your valuable writings.
Blessings and my wish that you might have healers who have read your work and who bring their hearts and souls as well as their minds and technical skills to your care;
Warmly

Speedy recovery!
First and foremost I pray you have a speedy recovery. Secondly I want to thank you for the information you gave about preparation. Its something how often times we can prepare professionally but don’t prepare our families for certain unexpected situations similiar to what you’ve experienced. I myslef have been experiencing some health issues. I’ve put it off for sometime and recently found out that its very serious. Although I’m not concerned and I place my trust in the Lord. I still need to prepare myself and my family on how to handle the issue. I’ve made it my priority to prepare my family for such issues and how we are to operate in them. It only helps make things run more smoother. Again thanks for this message because it was truely blessed me. Get better SOON!!!!!!
We’ll be praying for your recovery. Get well soon!!!!
Get well soon Dan! In my thoughts and prayers.
God bless!
Pierre from Malta

Dan,
You don’t know me nor have I ever met you personally, but that’s the beauty of the internet. I’m just a small school superintendent in the rural country-side of Iowa who enjoys reading your materials and sharing them with our staff. I will start to lift you up in prayer to the One who has the answers and the reasons for your accident. I’m thankful you are ok and will heal. God’s Blessings to you.
Thanks

Hey Dan, what everyone else said!
REALLY wonderful, great and reassuring to see your words again.
Moxie does come to mind with your posting so soon! As Christian, Scott, IM and others noted, wow that you were ready, willing and able to convert this experience into a powerful LF learning and….clearly you have more work to do here.
Another leadership learning from your post today validates what and how you practice is what and how you will do—day to day and in intense situations.
Hope you are able to balance giving yourself permission to rest up and heal with focused efforts in recovery. As Al wrote, anything we can do online or otherwise, we are here.
like other above… your words have become part of my life and part of my own journey towards good stewardship. I wish you all the best in your personal journey in recovery… and look forward to celebrated that with regular Leadership Freaks!!
Sending you prayers and healing energy. You are a blessing to many, including me, and I trust you will be restored to perfect health in God’s perfect time. Rest. Be well.
Glad to hear you are alive and able to fight through this to a full recovery.
Great thing is that these types of experiences seem to only make us stronger so congratulations on the opportunity to grow even more.
I pray that you’ll have a speedy recovery and that your will and determination to recover won’t falter.
Hi Dan,
I hope you have a smooth and complete recovery! Take care.
Dan,
It is so wonderful to ‘hear’ your voice again. And typical that you would find the lesson in even this situation and share your wisdom with all of us – while you are recovering!
Take care of yourself! We are all here for you.
Heather

I am so sorry to hear about your accident. You must be in great pain. Please consider balancing your brain activity. There is no need to worry about your post. We’ll be here rooting for you. don’t wast your power by pushing yourself to perform. You’ve got a lot going on!! Your body needs your brain for it to heal.
Wishing you a strong, swift recovery.
The best advice I ever got when I was healing after an injury was this: Sleep all day, every day, unless you’re talking to your doctor or your loved ones or eating a nutritious meal. Sleep, eat nutritious foods, and sleep some more. That’s all you should do for at least a few weeks.
Best wishes to you and your family.
Best of luck with your recovery Dan. I hope it’s a speedy one.
Said a prayer for you today Dan! Be encouraged as you recover that you have been a tremendous source of inspiration and encouragement to many of us who desire to be ever-growing leaders. Thanks for adding value to our lives!!! Now…go get well!!!
Steve
Thank you for all you do! Your dedication, generosity, and wisdom are gifts to so many. So now, many of us are united in praying for your quick recovery. Get well soon!
Hi Dan,

How shocking – glad you are through the worst. I end up injured in hospital a few years back, i was much better in 3 months and a pretty much a full recovery in 12. It is quite amazing how the body repairs itself.
I trust you are comfortable now and wish you the speediest of returns to health.
Will

Dan,
Such troubling news, Dan! I’m sending healing vibes your way. So thankful you survived and are on the road to recovery, even as gradual as it might be.
Your circumstance is a sobering reminder that my life clock ticks, and like it or not, all of what I experience happens in harmony with the unrelenting flow of ‘a moment-in-time’. Today, I’m using your unfortunate news as a wake-up-call to be thankful for, and take full advantage of the things within my control.
You know as well as anyone that out of “out of crisis comes opportunity” .. keep the faith man!
Tom
Let’s hope it’s a short six months!

I hate to be the last man in line, but I’m just getting caught up on some old posts and emails. I wanted to extend my congratulations on surviving another day and wish you and your family well during your recovery. I also wish you strength during any difficulties that lay ahead in getting back to normal.
You’ll have thousands of people around the world praying for you Dan. I’ll certainly be one of them. Be blessed and be VERY gentle with yourself during this time (don’t give into the leadership frustration of inaction – there’s a time for everything). Sean.
Minor set-back. You got this licked. You’re the man, Dan. You know you are.
Speedy recovery to you Dan and a prayer for strength and good health to your family who will see you through to recovery.
Best,
Bharati
Hi Dan, I was flattened by a vehicle in January this year, went through hell, but have now come out the other end, so to speak.
I wish you well in your recovery and hope to reassure you that you will gain more inner strength from this experience than you may even imagine at this moment. The best way I can try to explain this is that you will suddenly realise that you have a new frame of mind and I know you will use it well.
Looking forward to more great posts as the pain subsides and concentration begins to recover.
Dan,
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I pray for a full recovery and want you to know that you have touched many lives.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,
Dear Dan,
You are very special to many as evidenced by the volume of the response. Your work has a special quality of hope and encouragement for those of us in the commercial and non profit leadership world. There is a great need for people of integrity and wisdom in our workplaces and especially in our government leadership. Your voice is a welcome call.
Keep that in mind that you have a mission beyond your imagination. Be encouraged that you will make a full recovery.Thank you for your writings.
I will say prayers for your health, and your family.
In Unity,
Mrs. W.B.
Dan – I’ll pray for your speedy recovery and that God will provide for you and your family during this difficult time.
Hi Dan,
Get well soon! If I can help in any way my door is always open to someone who gives so much.
Keep well and keep smiling!

Thinking of you in prayer, Dan. You’ve got faithful friends here in the cyber world; friends to whom your unique “voice,” perspective, and leadership mean so much! Stay focused on your recovery, God will take care of the rest – He’s already begun.
All the best,
