Discover Your Energizing Values
One of my clients felt energized after cleaning her closets. Creating order prepared her to tackle big challenges.
Life feels lighter when everything is in its place.
Order expands capacity.
Questions that Reveal Energizing Values
Adapt these questions to suit your own goals.
- What feels out of order?
- What would “in order” look like?
- What do you need to do to paint that picture?
- What else? Provide time to reflect.
- Where would you like to begin? (Explore the process.)
- What resources do you need?
- Who might help?
- How long will it take?
- When will you begin? (Move from general to specific.)
- Anything else?
The 11th Question
The first ten questions focus on execution. I asked another client, “What would it feel like if things were orderly?”
“Freedom!”
I said, “Things out of place own a piece of you. This isn’t really an organizing project. It’s a freedom project.”
“Yes.”
Order matters.
The 11th question reveals the energizing value: Freedom.
Vitality rises when you live your deepest values.

I love the quote “Order expands capacity” – I feel incredibly energized when I have things in my life that are in order. I also feel like my capacity for the work I can take on as well as the way I lead expands when I have things in order. Very nice reading before going into the weekend. I will defiantly take time this weekend to ask myself those 11 questions!
We neglect energy. Many of the people I work with find that monitoring their energy is useful. Once you understand where your energy comes from, it’s easier to manage it. Best wishes.
Simplicity.
When I work to simplify the problem or opportunity, it energizes me.
Dan, what’s your energizing value?
Hi Paul, Simplicity is a good one for me too. I choose the simple life. It’s energizing to have meaningful conversations and to complete a blog post. Thanks for asking.
