Talking is Learning

Coaches open channels for conversation because talking is learning.

You learn by talking unless you’re defending yourself.

Thinking generates ideas. Speaking tests them.

What seems crazy in thought may lead to brilliance.

Talking is learning when you…

  1. Allow people to take things back.
  2. Reflect what you hear. Let people hear their own thoughts.
  3. Invite people to express what they’re learning.
  4. Ask people to explain their thinking before decisions are made. Explaining clarifies thinking.

Allow people to learn while they talk. Don’t be quick to correct. Avoid jumping to conclusions.

Become a Leader People Talk To

#1. Clarify Context

Ask, “Are we exploring ideas or making decisions?” Give permission to share half-baked ideas.

#2. Acknowledge Power

Say, “I know my voice carries extra weight. I’m putting my opinion on ice.” Let’s test-drive some ideas.

Some "why questions" create adversarial conversations. Image of finger-pointing.

#3. Replace “Why” with “What” or “How”

“Why do you think that?” may sound like an accusation. Ask, “How did you come up with this idea?” or “What’s important to you about this?”

You Open Channels for Conversation When You

  • Stay curious longer.
  • Interrupt less.
  • Judge later.
  • Ask one more question.
  • Let silence do some work.
  • Reward honesty, not perfection.

Talking is learning. Safety is permission to learn out loud.
