The Immaturity Penalty

Immaturity doesn’t stay inside a person. It bleeds on everyone.

One defensive person delays honest conversations. One hothead makes everyone walk on eggshells. An insecure leader turns talented people into threats.

One leader who needs to be right keeps everyone working on the wrong problem.

Immature people suck organizational energy.

The Immaturity Penalty

Immature people suck organizational energy.

  • People rehearse how to talk to them.
  • Meetings happen before the meeting.
  • Feedback gets watered down.
  • Problems stay underground.
  • Coworkers compensate for behaviors no one confronts.
  • Teams organize around immature people.

Don’t Make Immaturity Easy

Healthy people naturally adapt to others. But constantly adapting to the immature enables them.

Overprotection promotes immaturity.

  • Give people enough authority that judgment matters.
  • Let them hear perspectives they don’t like.
  • Give them assignments where cooperation is essential.
  • Ask them to make decisions without having all the information.
  • Let them experience being wrong without humiliation.

Maturity develops when reality shrinks ego.

Immaturity loves comfort. Introduce productive friction. Reward responsible mistakes. Let irresponsible failure have consequences.

Maturity Sounds Like

  • “I was wrong.”
  • “I need help.”
  • “I don’t know. Tell me more.”
  • “You might be right.”
  • “I’ll take care of it.”
  • “I was disappointed, but I’m okay.”
  • “I wanted to react, but I took a breath.”

Maturity doesn’t arrive with fireworks.

Challenge immature behavior. Don’t reward it. Don’t protect it.

Don’t squander time coddling people who refuse to grow.
