People either lack ability or motivation or both.
–Ability includes knowledge, skills, and experience.
–Motivation includes desire, confidence, and determination.
Leaders have to figure out what does the person need–what is holding them back. What does the person need to perform at a higher level.
I find a lot of people aren’t motivated to learn new skills or work harder because their plate is already overflowing. They are stressed out and doing everything they can just to survive. In this case, leaders need to reduce the workload, reduce priorities, and remove obstacles. Then the person will be open to learning new skills and improving their process.
Paul, I do agree with your assessment-lack of ability or motivation. I have a couple of people who take the basic function of the job description and don’t do any more. I tried a different approach and gave these associates special assignments and the motivation lit a spark!
That’s great. When people are excited about the work that leads to increased motivation.
I would also add “opportunity” to the list. Especially if management keeps giving opportunities to the same folks over and over again. That burns out the “chosen few” and demoralizes everyone else.
