3 Ways to Live long and Prosper this Week

The Vulcan salute, “Live long and prosper,” was introduced on the season two premiere of Star Trek, 1967. If you’re not a Trekkie click here to catch up. Spock explained the hand gesture is connected to a Priestly blessing he saw when his grandfather took him to an orthodox synagogue.

3 ways to prosper this week:

#1. Flourish Monday morning.

The week is miserable when you think about the whole thing at once.

Energy looks for expression. Vitality goes up when you express energy with action. Vitality turns to worry when energy turns to negative anticipation.

You have energy for today, not tomorrow. Worry drains energy from today. “Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength- carrying two days at once.” Corrie Ten Boom

Momentum is a series of small wins; win Monday morning.

Action step: Choose how you show up. Adopt a forward-looking intention.

#2. Establish a calendar that reflects priorities.

Control your life by controlling your schedule.

Schedule priorities. Stephen R. Covey said, “The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule but to schedule your priorities.”

Some leaders get ready for Monday on Sunday evening; others set next week’s goals and priorities the Thursday before. Find your own rhythm, but earlier is less stressful.

Action step: Get your big rocks on your calendar.

#3. Reflect and refocus.

I have the attention span of a chipmunk on steroids. Urgencies distract most of us.

Action step: Dedicate five minutes at noon to reflect on the morning and refocus for the afternoon.

  1. Breathe deeply for one minute. (It’s longer than you think.)
  2. Honor progress. Write down what you accomplished in the morning.
  3. Ask yourself if the distractions you chased achieved meaningful goals.
  4. Refocus on how you want to show up.
  5. Choose one thing you must get done before end of day.
