How to Show Up Like a Leader Today
The most important leadership choice of the day is choosing how you show up.
Don’t react to people and circumstance. Respond from intention.
Show up:
How you show up determines where you end up.
- Show up complaining – encounter negativity.
- Show up closed to suggestions – receive resistance.
- Show up open to possibility – experience potential.
Choose one word that best captures how you want to show up today.
- Courageous.
- Open.
- Curious.
- Compassionate.
- Selfless.
- Optimistic.
- Grateful.
- Practical.
- Relational.
- Friendly.
- Connecting.
- Future-focused.
- Interested.
- Responsive.
- Candid.
- Other-centric.
Behavior:
Determine one or two behaviors that best express the way you want to show up.
- Grateful. End every conversation with a word of gratitude.
- Interested. “Tell me more.”
- Future-focused. “Where does this take us?”
- Relational. “What’s going on for you?”
“Show up” partner:
Tell someone how you’re showing up today. Ask them for encouragement and feedback during the day.
Suppose today’s word is interested.
Seek feedback:
- What did you see me doing that expressed interest?
- When am I least interested?
- When am I most interested?
- How might I improve my expressions of interest?
You go further with others. Isolation is discouraging.
Lonely leaders make choices to be on their own.
Reflect:
Reflect on your practice at the end of the day.
- How did you show interest during the day? (insert your word.)
- What does lack of interest say about you?
- When were you best at showing interest?
- How might you be better next time?
Choose:
Choose the way you want to show up tomorrow when you go to bed tonight.
- Review the above list or make your own.
- Confirm your intention when you get up in the morning.
- Determine one or two behaviors that best express your intention.
- Declare your intention to your “show up” partner.
Repeat for a week and evaluate the practice.
What word best expresses the way you want to show up today?
What one or two behaviors best express your intention?
Good morning Dan,
“Open”, is the word today for me ready to get things done, yet “open” for any issues needing resolved, and yes the day started with the Plotter needing paper, check, done, Particular device needing modified with Bezels to allow function, check. “Correct drawings arrived” to finish bid, check. What’s next? Days just beginning feeling accomplished before 08:00 AM, Wahoo!
All four behaviors fit today so far, rationalize what needs done and move forward, full speed ahead “Captain”!
Thanks Tim. Your word is industrious or maybe initiative. I’m tired already. 🙂
Have a great day.
Dan,
Based on your response to Daryl, I will use “focused”, acting with others in mind, 5 of us use the plotter, the bezels were for a Client solution, and the drawings perhaps a new client, etc…
Was so inspired by how this opened a door to who my learners were in the moment they sat down for my session. THANKS! I am now officially hooked on your blog! I am new to posting, but I think this link will work: https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6401061110199525376
Today I want to be Courageous and Curious. Bold and humble. Happy Monday! Let’s go get ’em!
Thanks J. Go for it.
Just finished my 8:00 am Management class.
I tried to show up–Prepared and Present!
Thanks Paul. The practice of presence is a real challenge in busy environments. Best wishes.
That old quote, “If you don’t know where you are going, any path will get you there.”
Good stuff.
Thanks Dr. Scott. Yes indeed. I find it surprising that people who are trained to make decisions seldom decide how they show up.
In general, I think leaders show up “open” to what is and “curious and optimistic” about what could be.
Thanks Paul. I was thinking about Listening with a forward-facing posture is an approach that captures many things.
Lots of great ways listed in the blog and in the comments. Here are a couple more: I think it important for a leader to show up both energetic and supportive. Nothing beats a leader who supports his/her staff, and is one they can trust to “have their backs.” And being energetic is something I would want to see in a leader . . . to inspire confidence and set the tone for tackling issues/problems.
Thanks Daryl. I’m sure it’s insufficient, but the word that comes to mind is other-focused. Show up to serve the best interest of others. Act with others in mind.
Thanks for adding to the list.
Good one! My biggest weakness: I always complain. On the other hand, my biggest strength is: I am open to all possibilities. Meanwhile, I am Interested, and Grateful; that’s why, I can make relation. Also I am future focused. Still I lag behind the path of great leaders only because of my complaining attitude. I am trying hard to win over this weakness.
Thanks onitro. I wonder what the good side of complaining might look like?
Show up living the organisation mission
Excellent Dan people forget that if they turn up to work positive with a smile it will spread
around the team without them even realising. Thanks
